Mary Massey

Mary is a retired science teacher and senior leader with 36 years in education. She served as an HMI and education consultant, specializing in school improvement, safeguarding, and governance. Since retiring, Mary has chaired several Interim Executive Boards, helping schools move out of special measures. She enjoys Nordic walking, piano, singing, gardening, and spending time with grandchildren. Mary is passionate about using her experience to make a meaningful difference in students’ lives.

Phil Howell

Phil is the Pastor of a local church in Crewe and has led a growing congregation for 15 years. Previously a high school teacher, Phil became a governor to support The Oaks Academy during a time of need. His long-standing connection with the school includes hosting church services in the school hall and leading weekly drop-ins. Phil enjoys football, cycling, gardening, and travel. He finds inspiration in the school’s transformation and is proud to contribute to its continued success.

Helen Pate

Helen is a Teaching Assistant at a local primary school, a role she has held for 10 years. She became a governor after seeing the inclusive environment at The Oaks Academy when her son joined. Helen is new to governance but is passionate about education and supporting children. She enjoys baking, walking her dog, and spending time with her two children. Helen is enthusiastic about learning more about secondary education and contributing to the school’s success.

John Weir

John is a former business owner and consultant with experience in education partnerships and government projects. He led the creation of the UK’s first island-wide Business Improvement District on Bute. With governance experience in both primary and secondary schools, John has secured funding for SEND classrooms and chaired education partnerships. He enjoys sports and is passionate about helping students explore diverse learning paths. His motto: “Never start with NO… Let’s plan to achieve.”

Cody Brookes

Cody is a trainee solicitor at Irwin Mitchell LLP, specializing in commercial real estate, planning, and environmental law. He became a governor to give back to his community and support educational opportunities for young people. Cody enjoys running, karate, and travel. A Crewe native and former student of Sir William Stanier, he values the openness of the school community and the insights gained through governance.

Dr Andrew Middleton

With over 25 years in education, Andrew is a seasoned Computer Science teacher deeply committed to Cheshire East. He has served as a governor across multiple schools, including primary and secondary institutions, and worked with the Cheshire East Governance Service. Andrew is passionate about preparing students for successful careers and sees The Oaks Academy as a transformative force in Crewe. A father of three, he values the school’s focus on academic excellence and character development. His extensive governance experience and local ties make him a dedicated advocate for continued progress at The Oaks.
